Tomorrow’s Engineer Week 2023:  Day 3

Day 3 of our Q&A with our Lead Design Engineer for Tomorrow’s Engineers Week 2023.

The field of engineering has vast array of disciplines and boundless potential to have a positive impact in the world we live in. SMC’s Lead Engineer, Guy Watson shares more on Day 3 of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week.

1.  For Tomorrow’s Engineer Week, what advice would you give to students or young individuals considering a career in engineering?

“The world of Engineering is vast, there are a lot of different disciplines you can go into so try as much as you can and see what you like the most and don’t be afraid by any of it, be open minded.

I would also say generally to students and young individuals but it is following something I have personally struggled with, which is not limited to just Engineering: Try not to compare yourself to others, we all have our own path and journey and all get places at different speeds.”

2.  In what ways do you believe engineering can contribute to solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges?

“So many ways! Renewable energies, natural disaster prevention, a few of many challenges the world faces that engineering solutions can assist with. When you think about the work that has already gone into the above alone, solar panels, wind turbines, hydro-turbines, buildings with earthquake dampening structures, flood defences, the list goes on, all these have come about because of engineering. Let’s keep it going!”

3.  How do you balance the demands of your current projects with your commitment to lifelong learning and staying at the cutting edge of your discipline?

“I would be lying to say that I have the balance sussed, however the beauty of engineering is that current projects can come hand-in-hand with learning. Yes, there are projects that can feel like a bit of copy and paste, but others come along and really push and challenge you. I find this learning to be the most beneficial because you can relate your learning to a real application instead of reading a book or watching a video and potentially not retaining that information.”

Tomorrow’s Engineer Week (6-10 November 2023) is an excellent opportunity to shine a spotlight on the amazing minds and talents that drive progress in our field.

It is an opportunity to help students explore the alignment of their skills and passions with the world of engineering and to shine a light on inspirational engineers and technicians, reshaping young people’s perceptions of the industry.
